Fixing Mosquito and Firefly RC Helicopter Wings

Postby jimRC on Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:37 pm

If you've ever flown the Mosquito then you are aware that it is one of the most controllable, indoor, mini RC helicopter available. To keep the copter lightweight, the designers decided to go with wings that are made out of ultra thin plastic. This allows the copter to be very maneuverable and helps extend the battery life. Unfortunately these wings are also very fragile and after a few serious crashes you may find some cracks in your wings. Luckily this is easily fixable as I will detail below:

Tools:
Scissors
Packing tape

Problem: As you can see, the lower wing has completely separated from the outer ring.

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is remove the clear tubing at the top of the rotor shaft. Here I've lifted off the top set of blades.

Step 2: I've removed the 2 spacers and then the lower set of blades.

Step 3: With the problem wing removed from the body, it is much easier to patch.

Step 4: Cut a piece of packing tape 1/2" x 1/4", line up your blade with the broken bit on the ring, and place your tape on the top as shown and wrap it down, around the outer ring, to the bottom of the blade.

Step 5: Cut another piece of tape. This will be used to secure the first piece of tape. Place it on the blade over top of the existing tape. Wrap it around the bottom and let the sticky sides stick together.

Step 6: Now cut off the excess, leaving just the slightest bit of tape.

Step 7: Here it is once it has been cut.

Step 8: Now replace the lower set of blades, the two spacers, the top set of blades, and finally the tubing and you're done!

Let me know what you think of my fix. Hope this helps.
